Install Eeebuntu on an Asus Eee PC
For those who do not know, the Asus Eee Pc belongs to a new generation of netbooks, which are not known for its features but for its size. They come equipped with the basics and need to run an operating system and some applications that do not consume too many resources. This type of equipment are geared for people who just use it to connect to the internet, create a document and nothing else.
The Asus Eee PC is sold with two operating systems to choose from: Windows XP or Xandros (a Linux distribution). This does not mean that you can install another operating system, in fact you can install either, although you have to install via USB, as it has no optical drive.
In this type of laptop should install, that if any system that does not consume too many resources, so you should install any Linux distribution. In the case of the Eee PC is already special distributions, adapted to the screen size and include the drivers and some useful applications. We will focus here on Eeebuntu, a distribution based on Ubuntu. To install it we need the following:
- Pen of at least 1 gig.
- A computer with Windows XP.
- The Eeebuntu ISO, you can download it from here.
- The utility Daemon Tools, which you can download from here .
- Syslinux utility, we will need to start our pendrive to boot the computer. To download, here .
Started at
1.-install Daemon Tools, we will create an icon on the taskbar. Right click on it and give it to CD / DVD-ROM Virtual, we choose the virtual device and select "Mount Image" then select the Eeebuntu ISO, we have previously downloaded. We will create a virtual drive in My Computer, where we will list all files including ISO.
2.-format the flash drive in FAT32.
3.-We copy the entire contents of the virtual drive in the pendrive.
4.-Unzip Syslinux content that we had zipped down to the desktop, a folder called syslinux.
5.-We give Start, Run and type cmd. We open in Ms-Dos window, where you would type:
cd Desktop \ syslinux \ win32
syslinux.exe-m unit (which will replace the drive letter)
After writing the above does not show any message, so once again let us write, close the window.
6.-We went to the isolinux folder. We copy all the files into the root of the pendrive.
7.-While at the root of the pendrive, we seek the isolinux.cfg file and rename it to syslinux.cfg.
8.-We extract the flash drive and connect the Eee Pc where we will install it, when lit, press Esc and select the USB drive. This loads the installation program, as if it were a live CD.
Finally, add that this is not only valid for Eeebuntu, but serves to any distribution of Linux. I've tried it with Eeebuntu, Xubuntu and gOS, and in all three cases has been installed without problems.

Install Eeebuntu on an Asus Eee PC
In this type of laptop should install any operating system that does not consume too many resources, so you should install any Linux distribution. In the case of the Eee PC is special distributions and adapted to the SIZE ...
although I tried and liked but somewhat slow start
wind would make or translate a tutorial on how to install Arch Linux that they say it fits well in the eee
butelo, as I said in the tutorial, you may also serve for this distribution, simply change the iso Eeebuntu for Arch Linux.
Thank you very much for this guide, it has worked great. I hope you can help me with this please, I want to install Eeebuntu Standard on my Eee PC 2G Surf but do not know much about partitions, can you tell me what these and the size you have to have each? Thank you very much!
sebastian, to install Linux you always need two partitions, format an ext2 or ext3 (I recommend it), and another called swap, although it is optional, it is recommended that you enable. Since your laptop has only 2GB of hard drive I would recommend that the swap partition of 512 megs hicieses.
Ok!
Thank you very much for the answer soon, I'll do tell me.
Thank you.
Hello, I tried to put everything as you say but I could not get to the installation of Eeebuntu.
When I turn on my netbook, I give F2 and enter the BIOS, I get 3 options: a HD (hard disk), another that is ATAPI CD-ROM, and the last one is Removable Dev
I tried the Atapi cd-rom and the removable dev., Either I did well ...
what can be?
Well you have two options to install, you can record Eeebuntu on a CD and install from an external drive, or from a usb. If you do not want to complicate life I recommend the first option. I guess I'll be trying to install from a flash drive, if you followed exactly the steps, you should work in principle, try to redo the flash drive bootable with syslinux utility, because even after you do the other steps well, at least you should read the flash drive and give you an error.
Then I went back to try and Kingston appeared to me to start there in the bios des, explained everything very well and thanks for the attention
A saludooo!
Thank you very much, you saved my life. I found it nowhere better explained.
Greetings!
good, when I dump the contents of the virtual drive formatted in the pen and throws me a sign error that file can not be copied due to read error at source will be punctured iso,
indeed lower the 3.0
thank you very much.
Yes, Gonzalo, has all the earmarks of that is the problem iso.
thank you very much, change the iso, and now pass that step despite the redundancy, but I pond in the execution of commands in two,
I tried it like this:
cd Desktop \ syslinux \ win32syslinux.exe-m unit:
also like this:
cd Desktop \ syslinux \ win32 \ syslinux.exe-m unit:
and nothing.
already resolved to copy the syslinux folder to c, we delete the extention as I incorporated the version on the folder (which perhaps was not before) and pull the following command line:
c: \ syslinux \ syslinux.exe G:
And it did.
thanks for the good vibes, greetings
Kbesaurio.
connect the pen to the asus, I press esc, choose the pen as a unit, and after I read it says boot failed.
I was not formatted in fat 16, the tool did give me asus drivers, as windows gives the option to format fat32, so I do well and throws me a sign of syslinux 2.10 and then says boot failed ...
Now if you do not know what to do ... haha
thanks for the support.
che was doing either ....
SAMPLE NOT TAKE ANYTHING I DID ...
Do you work Gonzalo? In principle, if you follow everything step by step you should have no problem.
see the truth that does not work, maybe it's the iso.
I will not let me do is put the cd command, there I strip mistake, and look to review the directories.
question, syslinux.exe the syslinux folder, not on win32, it will be that.?
I'm probanddo with unebotin tool is the process that is so neglected, that I will discard manual errors.
Well, in principle the program is put on the road, but varies only have to look into what folder.
I miss him and all like the Institute esxactamente but I get "disk error. Press a key "what can be? someone answer me
Hello Paolo. Could you tell me what exactly you step out that error?
Thanks I could install perfect. Occupy Windows 7, in which case I recommend you perform step 5 in Safe Mode, otherwise it will be impossible to complete. At first USE THE iso standard, but since I installed Eeebuntu on an Asus 2g surf is right for the iso install base, so there will be enough space.
I have a couple of doubts: The Spanish installation is not entirely conmpleta Spanish How do I install from the console? and Is this method used to install any linux distro from a flash drive? I think so, but I like that I will confirm. Thanks
Manuel, to install the language pack get into Synaptic, and from there try searching something like "ubuntu spanish" I do not remember now the exact name of the repositories to install.
As for your second question, yes, used to install any distribution. I hope I've been helpful. A greeting.
I have no problem in preparing the flash drive bootable, but when I start the boot I have this message:
EDD 06/28/2010 SYSLINUX 4.00 Copyright (C) 1994-2010 H. Anvin Peter et al
Unknown keyword in configuration file: gfxboot
vesamen.C32: not a COM32R image
boot:
Any suggestions?
Santiago, in what format you put the stick?
I have the same problem .... santiago format my flash drive is fat 32!
please help ...
oscar, the truth I'm not sure it can be. Try try another iso, and if still not resolved again comentarmelo
Ami I feel the same as James and Oscar, but the system I try to install the Notebook Edition Ubuntu 10.10 and I get SYSLINUX 3.82 09/06/2009 EBIOS Copyright (C) 1994-2009 H. Anvin Peter et al.
Or I get remove disk / media
pres. any key to restart

Please help, I want to install your Ubuntu to my machine to go faster than seven, that is stunned and do not want to worry about viruses.
